Ricehigh covers it quite well for the K-x. The K-5 is almost the same.
http://ricehigh.blogspot.com/2010/01/k-x-debug-mode-tutorial-af-adjustment.html

Don't adjust anything else and in debug 100 = 10 of the usual units.
Don't change AF Area Test or AF Area Number

I only ever use my centre focus point.

The adjustments are additive. You can leave it in debug mode
whilst you do any checks. Leave debug mode via the menu.

thanks Algi ,forgot about ricehigh, had a look around his stuff and it looks as if you can only do it using PK Tether with the K5,
something to do with the file structure being different.

That's easy to use just connect a USB lead and click DEBUG ON
on the PKTether menu. Remove from USB and switch off from the
camera when finished. I've sometimes left it for a few days in
DEBUG mode. I've one MF lens that needs -170 to work the green
light/beep when in focus. I don't think any of my lenses need
a + adjustment so I might set -100 permanently in DEBUG.

that sounds a lot easier, still not sure it is what i need . i can set my lenses up on a chart ok but the problem i appear to have is that distant infinity ,say 1/2 mile, is not focusing correctly, lack of detail when viewed at 100%. just wondered if i back focused the base line by 50 it would do the trick and still allow my lenses to be adjusted as required, as they all wanted + adjustment to varying degrees. people on the American site have had the same problem, but they seem to have sent theirs to service
or hope my tax rebate is big enough to trade it in against K5 MK2

When you are focusing at long distances, the immense depth of field should render everything in focus.

If we are talking about telephoto shots here then it may be that the problem is aerial haze, or camera shake.

Try it again on a firm tripod using the 2 second delayed action to remove any chance of moving the camera. Try say f/8 at a low ISO value and see what you get. The only other thing to remember is that trees and other foliage move in the breeze, so subject movement can affect sharpness too. Therefore, perhaps a building would be a good test subject.
Best regards, John

You shouldn't have a problem focussing at infinity.
You might have to send the lens back. Some lenses
are user adjustable, but not many.

thanks to both of you,but it turns out John hit the nail on the head again. i do not usually take a tripod or any other support with me, just tried his suggestion on some dormer windows about 3/4 mile away, with DA21, put it into ps up to 100% and the detail is far better than i have managed before and after minimum sharpening was great. must have got a bit shakier over the last 12 months or so.once again thanks.
still hope i will have enough for the MK2 though.
