K30 expanded area autofocus

You did well to catch that! Tell us about the expanded AF and how did you apply it to this shot?

Yeah, I've been using it for birds and dragonflies in flight. I can't make my mind up if it helps, I go thru' centre point only, expanded af, 5 point auto, 11 point auto.... sometimes one setting works great and I think I've got it, then the next day something else work better....
Great shot, a southern hawker?
I wouldn't mind a setting that would allow me to tell it to focus on the closest thing though, as the amount of times I have the dragonfly as an out of focus blur smack over the centre point and the camera is stubbornly focusing on the background.....

I have never managed to get one of those in flight, AF or MF! Well done!
If I understand correctly, the K30s expanded AF feature allows the subject to stray from the selected focus point onto an adjacent one briefly without getting all excited.
So if you're tracking the little guy in the shot above on centre focus point mode, and you slip a bit so he's not on the centre point anymore but the top left point picks him up, the camera wont imediately try to re-focus on the background but will wait and see if you re-centre the original subject.
