I don't know if it's relevant to what you are experiencing, but there are two options with the built in flash.
One is to allow shutter release regardless of whether or not the flash is activated.
The other is to require the flash to be fully charged before shutter release is possible.
Also check that the camera is in focus, as there is a similar choice over focusing. One is wait for focus until release is possible, the other is release shutter regardless.
These items are in the menu system and can be changed as required.

Another reason, if you are using a zoom lens, e.g. 18-55mm, you have it at the wide end, 18mm, and the camera will not allow the flash to operate.

Hmm - not tried that yet - might be a good idea before next weekend.
Was intending to have the 18-250 on for the weekend

I've just taken a photo using the internal flash on my K30 using Av, with the 18-55mm MK2 kit lens at 18mm, f/5.6, ISO100. It works fine.

Well, that is what I have always found but after reading some of the replies above, perhaps I wasn't giving it long enought to recharge?

What mode/settings where you using. I could try it on mine to see if i have same problem.
On another camera I have it does not let you use flash when it is set to high speed burst(I spent alot of time trying to figure out why the flash would not fire on that before the penny finally dropped), it thought the K30 would be the same but it still allows the flash to be used and the burst speed is reduced untill the flash recharges.

Tried it last night in my sitting room -and I knew that flash would be needed.
Popped the flash up , focused - waited for confirmation of focus , heard another noise pressed the button , flash fired - decent pic when seen in camera
Did it again from a different angle and at a different aperture - again it worked well.
Have to say I'm looking forward to using the K-30 for real this weekend - I've taken a few shots now [ 6 !!] just so my fingers will drop onto the correct spots [ still not used to having a front dial which seems very very near to the lever for the on/off switch ] but hey that should settle down after a bit.

Update, now I had chance to return to my local camera shop who supplied the K30, they had a quick play and confirmed all was setup correctly and that the issue seemed to be with the cameras hardware. Fantastic customer service received as they simply exchanged the camera body with a new one. Could not have been more helpful. Pays to buy Local.
Once again thank you for you help.

Just picked up my K30 today and seem to be having the exact same problem, flash won't fire in either Auto or Manual modes despite setting the Flash "On" option. I'll keep playing about with it to see if I've messed with any settings but it looks like a trip to my local camera shop too

Just tried with a shoe mount flash which worked fine, definitely looking like a hardware problem with the built in flash.
