Here's a couple of images from the dark recesses of Gwydir Castle, shot at 3200 ISO with the K20D and SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm WR lens.
First, at 1/15sec:

And at 1/10sec:

The noise is visible, but not excessive, in no. 2. Did you use any form of noise processing?

Lovely images, by the way.
Best regards
Terry

No, none. I was just quite pleased to be able to get images in a very dark place (1/15 sec by the way) and for them to be reasonably sharp (SR) and well exposed. Noise never bothers me and I do think it shows that we don't need fast lenses to take images in dark places.

Just shows what an excellent kit lens Pentax offers, and of course that the photographer is the key element.

And I think you are right, we easily get too hang-up in noise issues.
Best regards
Terry

Good results John.

The kit lens is probably my least used AF Pentax lens, yet there is no reason for it to be.

I expect that the key to it is 'well exposed' John. These have come up well.

Amazingly little noise for 3200 iso with no noise reduction. i don't think my K7 matches that. Everything I have shot at 3200 looks very noisy. Did you expose to the right on these shots?

Isn't noise reduction used in cam as soon as ISO goes over 800?

Depends how you have set item 18 (high ISO noise reduction) in the Custom Setting menu. Would be interesting to know which settings John uses for High ISO and Slow Shutter.

I do allow the camera to apply its own noise reduction but don't use any additional software.

Remarkable quality for the ASA setting. Comparable (better even?) than my recent shots at 800 ASA. Just shows how things have developed in recent years.

The clock image is lovely with the mixture of the decoration, the clock and the reflections.

Best wishes, Kris.

Lovin' the clock pic John.

I don't mind noise at all. I often add it ( as grain ) in silver FX pro or Color FX pro on purpose.
