James, what is the issue with an Echeque ? besides it taking 5 days to clear into your account, I don't know what the problem is. I have been paid a number of times this way for gear I have sold, theres never been a drama with it.
If you have your account set up where as the funds are deducted directly from your Paypal account, and if there are insufficent funds there the remainder is deducted from your nominated bank account, these transactions are instant and it is how I have always done it.
My understanding of an echeque (which I have never used) is if you have your paypal account linked to your credit card, then there is a waiting period before it clears into your account. but I could be wrong on that.
So can you tell me what the problem with an Echeque is :

To be honest, the issue with the e-cheque was me.
Expected clearing date (from 3rd Dec) was the 14th - 17th December. When reading up on e-cheques (as I had never had one before) on Paypal's website, I came across this quote 'they are useful........when a transaction is too risky to allow an instant payment.'
Alarm bells rang, so I pulled out quick. Still all sorted now, James took a drive down so he now has the K20 at least 2 weeks quicker than he would have had, had a good chat and sent him in the direction of SRS who I'm sure relieved him of a few quid as well!

All you need to do with a eCheque is wait for it to clear. Just like any other cheque.
The downside to this is that it can take quite a long time, sometimes 10 days or more.
I've had a couple of eCheque payment, but as long as the buyer realised that they would have to wait for the goods it wasn't a problem.

I still don't understand what the difference is between an instant payment and an Echeque aside from the clearing period. What makes it, useful........when a transaction is too risky to allow an instant payment. (as Paypal puts it) : are there further checks performed to validate legitimacy.

The last e-cheque I had took 18 days to clear through paypal's wonderful system!!!
Still, my customer in Latvia was all to willing to wait for his PC bits, which he got 2 days after the cheque cleared. Who says the Royal Mail is slow, paypal could learn a thing or two about customer service from them.

When you expect instant as you have done for years, then get a 2 week wait instead, and Paypal mentioning 'risky transaction' it does make you a little hesitant, and it did give me cold feet I can tell you! Did I over react? Maybe I did, and did apologise to James if it came across the wrong way, but it just didn't feel right to me, which is normally the sign to walk away.I still don't understand what the difference is between an instant payment and an Echeque aside from the clearing period. But it ended up well as I got to meet James when he came down with real money instead, (really like the idea of putting faces to names!) and had a good chat as well, not to mention that he got to take in SRS on his trip as well!
PS expecting my commission cheque in the post!

Echeques are safer because the cash comes directly from the buyers bank account so no chance of credit card fraud or transaction reversals. they usually come about when the buyer has no credit card attached to their Paypal account or or the card has expired. What should only take 3/4 days usually turns in to a 2/3 weeks wait thanks to Paypal.

Maybe but I have walked on numerous occasions and have lost a few sales along the way. Normally though I have been right to trust my instincts,

Are you sure Mike? The only reason I ask is because at the bottom of the transaction details it says:-Echeques are safer because the cash comes directly from the buyers bank account so no chance of credit card fraud or transaction reversals.
Quote:
Reversals:
Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have posted the item to your buyer

I think they put that at the bottom of every transaction.
It always used to be the case, the only way a transaction could be reversed was if Paypal deemed the item not to be as described (or not delivered using a trackable method).
They may well have changed it though .. Paypal seem to change theit T&C almost weekly anyway.
