K110D and Three Older Pentax Flashes

AFAIK, both Canon & Nikon are P-TTL (i-TTL etc) only.
There may even be compatibility issues with older flashes too

Thanks for the info, Matt. In your opinion, is the P-TTL better than the TTL used in the first Pentax DSLRs? BTW, I'll be interested when your book is ready. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a P-TTL flash for my K10D or just soldier on with the TTL flashes I have, used on auto.

Taking the long view, back in the day we old f***s had to use guide numbers! And flash bulbs! When the thyristor flashes arrived we thought we'd died and gone to heaven. Imagine, just set your f-stop and, within a range of distances, just shoot! I guess it's human nature never to be satisfied.

There's still a lot to be said for the "A" mode flash - and there's some little tricks with the dSLRs that can help too.
P-TTL can be a mixed blessing, TBH. It is very good at preserving the highlights (which is important for digital). However, there are times when it just seems underexposed - it's almost too cautious. Yet, most of the "problems" with P-TTL are down to people not understanding the limitations and restrictions of flash in general.

I'd say - if you're getting the results you need, stick to what you have
(Some of the nicest facilities of P-TTL are wireless triggering and high speed synchronisation. But they're not essential to most requirements.)

I think only limited lens/camera/flash combos in the canon line work well together. you need a newwer EOS body and EX flash, COMBINED with newer lenses to get it all to work.

The main reason I dislike canon, is the way the company comes out with a new feature every few years, then they try to force you to buy a whole new system........even the way they try to force out other brands... at a time when most wedding photographers were toting vivitar 285's and 283's, canon decides thier "New" af bodies, had to have a new lensmount, new flash units, AND a rediculously low voltage synch, to make damn sure you couldn't use your existing vivitar flashes. Once you bought all the new kit, they introduce in lens image stabilazation, forcing you to buy new lenses, if you want that feature....then they upgraded the flash system, to work with new lenses, and new bodies again.
Much worse than Pentax. (pentax made the first slr with af, i believe; the entire focus system including battery was built into the lens...somebody who knows more than me can fill you in if that me-f body and 35-70 lens had any comatibility with other pentax gear)

I have never shot a wedding yet, where some photoenthusiast/pro/wannabe pro didn't start yapping about gear, and walk away astounded at how well I my gear spanning twenty-odd years works with the latest gear.
When I bought my first( second hand) camera, I started out with Pentax gear that was older than me. I still use the same m 50mm 1.4 i had then, and also the af 50mm 1.4 I bought last year. And my vivitar 283's side by side with my 500 ftz, and 360 fgz.

The original Pentax AF body, the ME-F, is the only body from that era with the little green diamond for focus confirmation. So it's very useable with later lenses.

I believe the 35-70 lens was quite good, and could be used in MF mode on MF bodies. But I'm not sure you would want to - it's heavy.
