Interesting summing up at the end of the EOS 40D review on dpreview.com.

The interesting page is this one:

Very interseting. Phil seems to be discovering RAW shooting. He may be entering the 20TH century. Perhaps there's hope for him as a reviewer.

The K10D can still hold its own against new cameras. It lacks live-view but other than that is one brilliant piece of kit. Wouldn't trade mine for anything.

(Except a K-Mount S5 Pro )

And ACR isn't even the best converter either

I'm using ACR with my Samsung GX 10. Be interested to know what would be the best RAW converter you would recommend.

Thanks

As a point of interest which RAW converter do you prefer?

In this order:

1. Silkypix (www.silkypix.com) - available in free and paid-for versions. I use the paid for one. Incredible colour control and excellent image quality with very good sharpening and noise reduction.

2. Capture One LE (www.phaseone.com) - bundled free with SanDisk Extreme III cards Great image quality (better than ACR, IMHO) and very usable. Lacks some features that I use a lot in Silkypix (arbitrary rotation, vignette control, distortion correction, upsizing etc), but still a very good output.

You'll find my brief guides to both C1LE and Silkypix on this site

Hope that helps!

Thank you for prompt reply. I have been testing Capture One and I agree that the colour rendition is excellent. I was disappointed that it did not support DNG format. My image management uses compressed DNG for storage and I produce TIF or PSD only for printing or JPG for making slide shows in Nero. I find the ability that the raw format gives me invaluable as I am still learning and like to revisit favorite shoots and reprocessing them; but as regards printing I intend to use Capture One in future.
Do you know when Version 4 is due and what will be included?

What is your opinion on capture one version 4 compared to silkypix 3?
Or haven't you tested the new capture one yet?

C1v4 has some nice touches - especially the highlights & shadows features. However, unless you buy the (expensive) pro version, you'll be missing out on: lens distortion corrects, vignette controls, highlight recovery, film colour emulation, arbitrary rotation, upsizing beyond 100%... plus better noise reduction and sharpening (IMHO).

Don't get me wrong, I like C1v4 from what I've seen, and I'll get at least three copies (one bought, 2 from Sandisk cards), but for real work I still use Silkypix DS3.

I often find that trying out images in another converter sometimes help unlock a tricky image, or helps when I'm getting bogged down in stuff.

Hope that's useful!

I know it's a little niche...but I'm happy with aperture.
saw a review (on orielly) that pitted several raw converter/workflow tools and (unfortunately canikons used no pentax) aperture, really performed exceptionally well....
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
