I notice that a good majority of you prefer the K10D over the K100D.
Also the mags seam to feel like wise.
I am a K100D user and am more than satisfied with its build quality ,optical excelance (penta prisum) etc and its ample array of features including manual ,shutter and apature priority etc in fact i find it very hard to beat at its now amazeing price.
Yet for all this it is still refered to as an entry level dslr and looked upon with a ceartain amount of derision when compaired to the much vaunted latest offering from Pentax K10D.
I have not used a K10D but on the face of it it is the same camera as the K100D with abeter built quality inthat it has better seals and weather protection, but without the added features of program modes and auto modes, and is therefore a manual camera at one and a half times the price of the K100D (not as much for ur money i`d say).
So i am obviously missing something here, what is it ?

I don't think I've read anything here that's been anything less than highly complimentary about the K100D, and certainly no derision.

You refer to a number of differences between the 10 and the 100, but not the fact that the 10 has a 10 MP sensor, and the 100 a 6 MP sensor. The 100D has a pentamirror viewfinder, not a pentaprism.

Also, the 10 has a host of auto features, so I'm not clear what you're getting at here.

The specs are here:

K10D: http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/en/35mm/k10d/spec.html

K100D: http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/en/35mm/k100d/spec.html

I'd probably agree that at £300 for camera and 18-55, the 100D offers better value for money than the 10D.

Edit: I notice from the specs that the 100D has a bunch of exposure modes listed as "(1) Auto Picture mode; (2) Portrait mode; (3) Landscape mode; (4) Macro mode (5) Action mode; (6) Night scene portrait mode;"

Was this what you were referring to? What do they actually do? Are they useful?

They are useful for people who don't know what they are doing, and they are an indicator of the main target market for this camera.

People who DO know what they are doing see the omission of idiot modes from the *ist D and K10D as a plus, not a minus.

But whomever the camera is aimed at, it is well-designed, well-made, and capable of superb results.

The K10D is better in all departments, and thus commands a higher price.

The OP is perhaps unaware that the shake reduction system in the K10D is more powerful, as is the AF system.

I suppose that if you don't know why the K10D is better, then in one sense you don't need it.

It's a higher level camera with more resolution, better build quality and features likely to appeal to advanced amateurs and professionals.

Having said that, if i had to use a K100D then I would quite happily get along with it. I would miss the 10.2MP resolution and the proper pentaprism finder though!

Now that I've had the 10 for a few months, I'm glad I waited so long before going digital.

Most of my photography is opportunistic, rather than constructed, so I often find that I have to crop a bit - sometimes a lot - to get the composition right.

I'm aware that I still need to do a lot of work with framing and composition, so that I make better use of the available pixels, but I find it hard to imagine how I'd do with only 6 million.

I suppose my composition would be better now, if I'd had to.

K100D has a pentamirror, not pentaprism, and 0.85X viewfinder magnification instead of 0.95X.

I'm not sure if you're winding us up or if you haven't studied the specification properly, but the K10D does have a Program mode and several other auto modes.

I have a DS but intend to upgrade to a K10D when the used prices come right down. I like the idea of 10 megapixels, better dust protection and more of the features being available via special buttons instead of menus. I might prefer the grip too. The only thing that might put me off is the extra size and weight.

The lack of special exposure modes (Portrait, Landscape, etc) doesn't bother me. Apart from the Sport one very occasionally when I'm in a hurry (a quick way of switching on continuous AF), I never use them on my DS. You can easily reproduce them (and in fact do better) using AV or TV mode (mostly AV) and a few menu settings.

No im not winding u up ,well may be just a little.
I have to admit when i posted this that i did so a little tonge in cheek and yes i was not fully aware of the K10 spec.
But my motive was to provoke a positive discussion on the matter and this it did educating me at the same time .
I now understand why the k100 is the entry level model.
I do use the camera manualy and creativly on many ocassions but i find the program modes useful when i have to get a shot in a hurry or when i am unsure of the exposure i need ( as you rightly suggest i sometimes may not know what i am doing) but i am learning all the time .

I wonder how many replies you'll get next time you do this.
