well, if you move the switch you are actually retracting/extending the drive coupling which couples the drive motor in the body to the gear system in the lens.
Take the lens of and move the switch, then you see that there is a little drive pin moving.

I know this is just me being pedantic but the focus mode lever on my new K10D clicks like it's catching on something internally ( the spring maybe? ) when I move it from the MF position back to AF. It doesn't do his when I move it from Af to MF though. Is this normal?.
