K10D Firmware

I have just bought a new K10D and was surprised to find the Firmware was only Version 1. I can't use remote assistant unless I have version 1.2.installed
Is it difficult to install? as I do not want to mess it up through ignorance. :

Welcome. The current version of the firmware is 1.3, and it is very easy indeed to install, providing you follow the instructions carefully, and carry them out to the letter.

They look complicated, but they really aren't.

You do not need to install v1.2 first, since each update contains all the previous ones as well.

100% correct, although it should be stressed that you should use freshly charged/new batteries before adding the new firmware to the camera.. if the camera shuts off during the process it might not work afterwards....

New? Not sure. I'd be inclined to ensure that a new battery holds charge properly before using it for a firmware update. So maybe give it a full charge, and use it for a while first.

Then charge it again, of course.

Do batteries hold a full charge from new? Or do they have to be 'conditioned' first at all? Can't remember...

Batteries improve with a few charging cycles, after which they work at optimum for a very long time before finally failing to hold a charge and dying.

Yep, should have been more careful with the original question, having done the same procedure with my *ist D and *ist DL....... then NEW batteries will be an option

Thanks for helpful information. I did use a freshly charged newish battery. I have successfully updated to Version 1.3
The only problem I had was when formatting the SD memory card whilst in the camera it still left the DCIM folder on the card. I put the .BIN file in there, fortunately the camera ignored it and I was able to start again. This time I formatted the card on my computer thus removing everything and the .BIN file was put into the root directory on the card.
