I have found the auto focus a bit of a nuisance this past week. When the subject a stone building some distance away, or a water scene for example. I have tried focusing on some more prominent feature but the camera seems to refuse to focus leaving the green light flashing. I have tried changing the focal length to maximum and this often helps. Any advise would be welcome to help me focus more quickly on the subject in these circumstances. :

Very obvious maybe......, but could it be that you have AF-C on instead of AF-S ?

Cameras focus by comparing areas of different contrast. So if you point the camera at a plain coloured wall, for example, it will have nothing to focus on.

Sometimes you will need to aim at something a similar distance away which provides the high contrast that the camera needs. Them keep the shutter half pressed, and re-frame.
