K100d start up problem

Weird thing happening.

Camera was last used on Monday with no problem. It's been sitting happily in the bag in comfortable surroundings since then. Admittedly, the batteries were still in which is poor form, I know.

Tried switching on this AM - nothing. Figured discharged battery to be the problem so switched to another set of rechargeables. As soon as the battery cover was closed the flash popped up accompanied by a rapid and repeated firing of the shutter mechanism for about two seconds.

Tried a different set of fresh standard batteries and the same thing happened.

Has anyone else encountered this ? Is there an obvious solution ? Is my camera sick ?

I have checked the manual but cant find anything that can explain this behaviour.

Sorry I don't know what the problem is (sounds serious), but I don't think it's bad form to leave the batteries in the camera for a reasonably long time when not using it. I think that's normal practice, and may even help the internal button battery from running down (?).

How about attempting to re-install the firmware?

I would insert a fully charged set of batteries and try the usual procedure described on the Pentax website somewhere. There is a combination of buttons to press when turning on the camera. I don't know, but maybe this would interrupt the camera's misbehaviour? Just an idea - that I would try, personally.

Failing that I think you will need to return it to the supplier or Pentax for a repair. Sounds like a very broken camera

Appreciate the helpful responses.

It went back to the shop today. 3 weeks until I see her again. At least the light should be a bit better by then.
