K100D Expected UK Release?

Apologies in advance, I'm sure this has been asked, however I'd just like to see if there is any progress. Does anyone know when the K100D will be available in the UK?

I don't know, but it just arrived in the US this past week. I ordered one and should have it by next Tuesday.

Pixmania has them in stock from 7 August body only for £412 or a few days later for body plus kit lens £452.

WARNING! Pixmania often show stock that they don't actually have yet - and it is usually a grey import - search other threads on this forum and you will see some of the problems I (and others) have had when dealing with Pixmania.

Several people in the Uk, myself included, have found Teknikdirekt to be cheap and reliable suppliers.

They are advertising the camera as "coming soon" at a price of approx £420, body only.

B&H in New York is very reliable, and has them in stock for £325 approx. Add £100 or so for shipping and VAT.

this is where I got my DL, and I couldn't fault them. Re: the free gifts.. the I had the camera bag as a freebie with mine, and it's a handy little gadget bag, or if you just wanted to take the camera and one smallish lens attached to a party.

Add £30 odd for the customs charge though, and they do guarantee even with that, they'll beat your own country's in stock price by £1.

Worth a look for comparison.

Liam, this seems rather expensive as VAT is not included. With an EU supplier, there is no VAT to pay.

Surely it is only UK VAT registered businesses that can pay for EU goods VAT free. End users still have to pay VAT. I regularly buy goods from EU for my business and if I don't supply a VAT number, I get charged VAT at the prevailing rate of the supplying country.

Deep in Pixmania's terms & conditions you will find a statement saying that Pentax (and other makers) items are sold with non-english manuals.

I meant that there is no MORE VAT to pay.

Technik's prices include German VAT. There is no more VAT to pay when the item enters the UK. The Hong Kong prices exclude VAT (because they don't have it, and are not in the EU), so VAT will be payable on delivery.

the import duty on my DL was IIRC, £34, so around 8-9%, rather than 17.5%, which keeps it reasonable..

If you're in the UK and the camera came from outside the EU then you should have been charged VAT on top of the import duty.

Depending on the carrier, you may also have to pay a handling fee on top of this - parcel force charges a whopping £13.50.

...and if you get away without paying the VAT on the import, then Customs and Excise can get you to cough up the VAT at any time in the future

So, legally it's 8-9% plus 17.5% plus handling fee.
But not necessarily in that order (ie it might be handling before VAT!)

Buying from the EU is usually a lot cheaper, and I had zero problems buying from Germany

Either your memory is faulty, or you were charged the wrong amount. VAT is always 17.5% on physical goods, and it is charged on the total landed cost, including shipping and duty. Duty is typically around 2% or so. It is VAT which is the killer.

Import duty on digital cameras is 4.8% and 6.4% on lenses.

There is no such thing as VAt free in euroland, VAT is included in the purchase price at the rate levied in the country you are purchasing from. If your a business with a VAT No you can still claim this VAT back.

As long as it's a legitimate business expense.
