Hi i have been considering buying a pentax ist, will i be able to use my k mount lenses with this camera?

*ist has the "crippled" mount, so in short: no.

Physically they will mount (the bayonet fitting is the same spec). If your lenses have the "A" (automatic) aperture, then yes you can use them on the *ist (and *ist-D, DS, and MZ-S)!

These cameras with the so called "crippled mount" cannot read back the aperture of the lens when you manually select an aperture. So, if you have K-mount lenses that do not have the "A" setting, they will not be usable

With the upgraded firmware they are usable on the *istD at any aperture setting – you just need to select manual metering mode and press the green button to take a reading at the stopped down aperture.

I think its fair to say that there is more compatibility with Pentax lenses and cameras than with most other marques. Being loyal to Pentax for many years has proved to be a good move!
