k-7 price

is the price of the k-7 that high because of the recent increase in prices generally or was it always going to be this high regardless of the weakness of the pound?

i ask be cause i wonder how sharply the price will fall when the pound strengthens.

Not as sharply as the price rose when the pound weakened.

you are quite right. and most stores will probably keep the p[rice high to make extra profits but hopefully a few will drop prices to encourage competition. i will probably just have to result to buying from abroad again.

That's actually very true, but partly because when the K7 was new all the stocks were new and arrived at the weakest time. These stocks will now be in the system for a while, so when the Pound strengthens there will be a delay before prices readjust as new stocks come in.

No sooner will the pound get stronger and Old Gorden will put the VAT back to 17% or higher.

K-7 has the same RRP as the K20 when it was first released IIRC.

The RRP was made including all the current price rises so we are not expecting it to go up again like the lenses have, on the downside I think the margins are a lot lower on the K-7 which is evident in the current street prices only being around £20 less than retail!

Also, since it's a new camera which, it's only natural for Pentax to ride the initial wave of enthusiasm and keep the price near RRP when fulfilling pre-orders. I'd expect it to come down as we get nearer the Christmas purchasing season. It's also bad luck launching what for many are new luxury items during a recession.

Like we've had with PC's in the past (perhaps less so now), it's a market that seems to have fallen into the trap of having to keep moving forwards with new models and new features, despite the fact that pretty much any DSLR to date will probably give most people everything they need/want/desire/can't-live-without - delete as applicable

To be honest, I'm not convinced by the arguments for the UK price of the K7. It's a lot more than the launch price in a number of other countries, using the current exchange rates. These rates have been similar for a while - eg 155 Yen to the UKP back in early June when I was in Japan, and before the body was available. (The rate was much worse for some time in the winter, but had "recovered" to 150-160 a while ago). However, clearly Pentax is a business, and so presumerably have calculated how to maximise their profits. I will be getting the K7 eventually, as I have some problems with my K10D and would like to have some of the features of the K7. However, with my level of income etc, I cannot justify paying the current price, particularly when it seems (to me anyway) that it is overpriced compared to a number of other countries.
