K-7: AE-L and Horizon Correction

Got a new K-7 today! I installed the latest 1.02 firmware before exploring the camera. I have experience with previous Pentax DSLR models; having a couple of problems with this new one:

1. The AE-L button doesn't seem to be working. The "*" never lights up. I'm in Av mode.

2. Horizon Correction doesn't seem to do anything. The special symbol never lights up.

What might I be doing wrong? Or could there be bugs with the new firmware? Thanks.

AE-L also does nothing after a Digital Preview.

Not looking good! I'm thinking either the actual switch is faulty or there is a bug in the firmware.

Strange, regarding AE-L you wouldn't happen to have an 'A' lens fitted but aperture set to something other than 'A'?

The only visible identification that you have horizon correction working is the little horizon correction symbol superimposed on the 'shake reduction hand' on the rear screen. Nothing additional appears in the view finder. It should just work :

By the way I also have 1.02 installed.

My AE-L button doesn't work with 'A' lens fitted set on 'A', nor with modern lens without an aperture ring.

I never see the little horizon correction symbol superimposed on the "hand" at all.

I'll try re-installing the firmware. I bet that doesn't work, though.

If you don't get any luck with v1.02 I wonder if anyone on the forum may have a copy of v1.01 you could try.
I'm afraid I don't, I've just hunted around and drawn a blank.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would indeed appreciate a copy of 1.01 if anyone can email it to me. However, I'm doubtful that it will work if 1.02 is OK in your camera, Greytop.

I fear I'm facing the disappointment and hassle of returning the camera for a replacement. Pentax's QA needs to be better, I think.

I have just tried the AE-L and Horizon Correction and they both work for me with version 1.02 firmware. (The K-7 mode was set to ‘P’ when I did the test).

I have PM’ed you a link to a copy of the 1.01 firmware. At 10MB its not a good idea to email it.

Progress!!! Leaving the battery out overnight has got the AE-L button working. With firmware 1.02.

Horizon Correction still doesn't do anything. I could live with that, but the camera is devalued if ever I sell it. So I've still got to get the camera replaced unless I get this feature working. Firmware 1.01 doesnt help.

A suggestion... I think I would do some tests with Shake Reduction on and off and also Composition adjustment. These features are all connected with the sensor motion hardware which is also used for Horizon Correction.

Shake Reduction seems to work and can be deactivated. Composition Adjustment works fine.

Well that's positive I guess.
If were me I think I'd probably now go for a change back to v1.01 firmware to see if it still doesn't work. I think that would pretty much conclude a hardware issue.

Just another thought, have you tried reverting to default settings (or I guess perhaps you already are as it is just out of the box).

Tried 1.01: doesn't make any difference.

I haven't tried reverting to default settings. That's a good idea, thanks.
