Hi
There seems to me to be a lot of background hiss when I use the internal microphone on my K-5.
This clip http://www.btinternet.com/~robheath/personal/IMK51048.AVI was recorded in a quiet room.
I would appreciated comments on whether the background hiss is excessive, and links to any similar clips for comparison.
Thanks Rob

Expect crap when using built-in microphones. They only cost a couple of pennies. A good mic costs as much as a camera.

Read my article on capturing sound for video for options depending on your budget.
Listen to my albums free on BandCamp. Or visit my main website for links to photography, etc.

I watched/listened to the clip.

I would imagine the mic employs a compressor ( automatic Gain Control ) and thus in a quiet room with a quite voice which isn't that much louder than the residual noise level everything is being amplified including the noise.

To test this, repeat your clip but this time after the initial 1, 2 , 3 get closer to the mic and speak a lot louder. See if the noise is pushed down in volume in relation to the signal.

And as rparmar says good quality sound costs the same as good quality images.

The sound codec used isn't recognised by Media Player Classic?
It plays on VLC, but I've always found that to have poor sound
quality anyway.

It does sound like the AGC has pushed up the background noise.

I've not tried Video on the K20D yet. Sound on miniDV recorders
isn't too bad.
