Hi, just bought this lens on ebay: pentax m smc 50mm f2, any good? to be honest it was pretty cheap (a few pounds) so I got carried away, but for all I know it could be a load of rubbish

Hi Jacqui, the lens you have bought is not 'a load of rubbish', but it's not as well regarded as the 50mm F1.7. I have both and get excellent images with each. The F2 is supposed to be a bit soft wide open, but I haven't particularly noticed this with mine.

How much did you pay?

Fiver + postage. First time Ive bought a manual lens, or come to that anything on ebay, in an auction.

I have the A version of the F2 and apart from my poor focusing skills I like the images it produces. Will

Bargain. I have one of these that came with the K1000 I was given for my 14th birthday! I like it - it's a nice portrait lens and works well with extension tubes, as well a reversing mount that I have as well. For a fiver plus postage you can't go wrong!

Pentax have never made a bad 50mm lens, both the f1.7 and f2 lenses on M and A mounts give good results.

It's just getting used to how to use them that causes problems, but once mastered...

Thats great, thanks, oh well for that money its a bit of fun to try it out, never had a manual lens or a prime before, just always stuck to the more modern zooms.

Hi Jacqui
It's a better lens than the zoom you missed!

For £5 it's a bargain. I wouldn't give mine away.

I just won some extension tubes. Sorry if i was bidding against you!
Have been looking for some auto tubes for a while so snapped them up today. Not just auto with the mechanical aperture but with the electrical contacts so AF/AE lens function too.

Yep... next thing you know you're bidding on an MEsuper because it's sporting a 1.7... Then you get a taste for 35mm film cameras... You buy a couple... Need lenses for them too... Suddenly you need an AF 35mm body and some nice F-glass to go with that... You have a shelf for camera stuff... You buy more and realize that the books now live in piles because the bookcase is now a camera/lens display unit... You walk to work as you spent your petrol money on a macro lens... Oh yes... Oh yes... 50 f2 is how it starts all right... 50 f2 is how it starts...

How did you manage to find them? I have been hunting for a set of these for some time now.

50mm f2 for sub £10 is a really nice deal! Congratulations

I like it, I think my daughter is already there, she started her first job last july in a camera shop and since then has bought 2 cameras, been given 2 cameras, and lost count of lenses shes bought/ been given, now shes starting on lighting equipment shes into canon though at the moment, because she has lots of friends at work also with canon who she can swap/trade lenses with, although she was pretty impressed with my k20d. Still, at 19 she could be spending it on a lot worse things Im lucky shes such a good kid in fact, as we speak she is away this weekend at her first photography job photographing the football tournament at butlins in Sussex.
