Ha! You do love to troll don't you.Shows what you know, the jpeg is an ISO Standard, nothing to do with Japanese camera engineers!
Ironically you have just revealed your own ignorance to the entire internet...

No need to be rude to each other guys....one thing is for sure, I'm very happy with the JPEG output from Pentax cameras. I adjust it to taste in the various menus and that's how we decide how we want the JPEGs to look. It's no different to deciding what film we like.
It wasn't an intention to have this as a RAW vs JPEG thread, it's really more about the ethical questions of people modifying news images. It exists also in using JPEG files to some extent, but I guess not if they are uploaded immediately to an editor. Certainly the JPEG saves a little time in the workflow, but not much is we are just converting without making major adjustments.
If all we are doing is opening a RAW file and saving as a JPEG then I don't really see much point in doing that anyway.

It would make more sense and have some purpose if the requirement was for a camera-generated jpeg only ...ie any jpeg that was saved in an editing programme would be ruled out.
As it stands, it appears to be that limited editing and saving in an image editing programme is allowed .... Which completely defeats any practical purposes I believe.
And of course Pentax camera jpegs originate from the programming work of Pentax engineers ... They develop the processing algorithms and the preset styles and looks, and determine the extents to which each adjustment type can affect an image. It's that design work that makes the Jpeg output particular to each camera model.
If you're going to adhere to these Reuters rules, then I think to get the best out of the camera you really need to work the custom image sliders hard and edit your images in-camera firmly.
Walkeja, didn't you see my question earlier? What were your custom image editing settings you used to get the nice tones on that shot of yours? Looks like you edited the shot really well. ....

So if I happen to take a world exclusive shot that's in raw Reuters will say no thanks

Extracting a JPEG from RAW in something like FASTSTONE will be indistinguishable from shooting only JPEG in camera. Neither will there be any changes to EXIF.

I think many (often to simply spar about capture formats) are mistaking creative photography from the cut and thrust of topical street/news photo journalism. I read the following on Petapixel... The second bit makes sense. They seem to have been clumsy with the original press release don'T you think?
Hi,
I’d like to pass on a note of request to our freelance contributors due to a worldwide policy change.. In future, please don’t send photos to Reuters that were processed from RAW or CR2 files. If you want to shoot raw images that’s fine, just take JPEGs at the same time. Only send us the photos that were originally JPEGs, with minimal processing (cropping, correcting levels, etc).
Cheers,
Reuters also told PetaPixel in a statement,
As eyewitness accounts of events covered by dedicated and responsible journalists, Reuters Pictures must reflect reality. While we aim for photography of the highest aesthetic quality, our goal is not to artistically interpret the news.

I doubt anything shot on a non-CaNikon camera would be acceptable anyway as the quality would be too poor, so we won't have to worry about it...
Seems reasonable to me. In my view the biggest problem with photography at the moment is over-post-processing. I've seen many a potentially fine photo ruined by it, and I think it would be harder to do straight-from-camera.

To suggest it's to reduce the risk of manipulation is plain silly because JPEGs can also be manipulated in PS and in any case, as we all know from past experience, clever geeks will always find a way to cheat with digital media should they wish to do so.
