I can't view PEFs or DNG on either machine......

so *ist D goes instead.... which is no bad thing I suppose, in the Galapagos it redeemed itself in idiot mode after some idiot had dropped it several feet onto solid concrete and it was stuck in default mode......

I thought digital was supposed to save money on film, especially when you have to keep updating storage devices and buying new HDDs

We have an Epson P2000 and to be honest it's more convenient - and cheaper - to just buy extra SD cards.

You'd have to buy a lot of cards to spend as much as the Epson costs.

Also, if it were to fail everything could be lost. There is no way every SD card is going to fail. I would guess that the failure rate of a memory card is pretty low in any event.

I lived in Kenya for many years, and well remember trying to get dust out of photo equipment.

In your place I would buy 4GB or even 8GB SD cards and take the K10D. It's dust-sealed, remember?

I took my Ds to Tanzania and it survived very well. I took two SD cards and a Vosonics Image tank. No problems.

On second thoughts KLM Africa can be very stroppy about handbaggage weight allowances so maybe not....
If you are flying KLM then do make sure you are under the handbaggage limit - wouldn't want to have to check the camera!

A 4 or 8 GB card can cost 70 pounds or thereabouts, same price as a 10-pack of Fuji Provia 400x from Fujilab....

more pics you take.. the more cards you have to buy....etc..etc..I thought digital was pushed as a means to save money by not having to buy film and pay for processing

*ist D goes anyway, it did well in Galapagos and is just a little bit lighter than the K10D, plus 12Mb PEF vs 19Mb DNG means my CF cards go that little bit further...(also taking Z-1)

Gwyn, I go with Kenya Airways from Heathrow so it means the chaos of traversing LHR on a Friday, but at least you get nice beer in Wetherspoons. My trip to Galapagos was on KLM, journey started in Heathrow, then via Ams, and Bonnaire to Quito....preceeded by a BMI flight from AMS to LHR for which I was mocked (it was more expensive to join the Quito flight from AMS), however, at least my luggage could not be lost in T4 as I had already checked my luggage on the Quito flight....

Since Kenya codeshare with KLM I am confused as to why you are putting yourself through the Heathrow torture, but if it saves a few Euros fair enough, or will you be back in the UK anyway then? Kenya are also strict on handbaggage so be aware of the weight of your kit.

I was hoping to go to TZ again next year but the OH can only get time off at short notice next year, isn't able to set in stone a few weeks off due to busy work schedule. TZ needs booking early for the camps we like. Ah well maybe the year after.

Strangely....LHR was much cheaper than leaving AMS....thankfully C@n0n and epson owning girlfriend lives near Heathrow...so that airport does have 'some' appeal....

We used to live near the lake when I was a lad, and I remember Peter Scott visiting and enthusing about the birdlife. My father was chairman of the local District Council at the time, and in that capacity wrote to the then colonial government suggesting the lake be made into a bird sanctuary. Instead it became a full-fledged national park.

I was once chased up a tree by a hippo there. We lived dangerously then.

These Rift Valley lakes rise and fall, even Naivasha, which is not a soda lake. I can recall seeing a car drive right across Lake Nakuru when it had dried almost to nothing. A couple of years later it was full of water again.

Personally I'd never go for cards bigger than that - 600 or more PEFs on one card at 8 GB? I don't think so.
