Is width everything?

It depends upon the individual's style and vision.

The Pentax 12-24mm is also very useable for critical applications such as architecture, because of its excellent control of distortion. In this respect it's better than the 14mm and certainly better than the Sigma 10-20mm.

I think so. I prefer my 16-50mm and use the 12-24mm either when space is tight or the scale of the subject (large building) requires it.
I actually find the 12-24 quite a useful landscape lens. The width can come in handy, but the superior performance up to 24mm over any other lens I have is even better.

Good decision which I doubt you'll regret. This Samsung badged lens (same lens) may still be for sale.

The 12-24mm lens is a stunner and I am glad I bought it before it doubled in price.

I have the Samsung version of the 12-24mm lens for sale at less than half the price that the Pentax original is listed for at SRS. Brand new, never used, has only been attached to my K10D to test it works...

PM me if interested.

Kris.

PS just noticed the plug Peter. Thanks!

Not long acquired the Pentax 12-24 and I am pleased that I stuck with my first choice but when I look at the price increases I am glad I do not still have to buy or I may have had to consider the Sigma or Tamron. All I need to do now is learn to use it to better advantage.

It's absolutely the best option; all you have to do is find one for the right price.

Even before the price increases, the Pentax 12-24 was out of my price range. Currently SRS have a used Samsung version for £799.
For the price you could get the Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 10-24

I ended up getting the Sigma 10-20, and I highly recommend it.
For me the right price was the Sigma, and no regrets.

I have both the sigma 10/20 and 17/70 both give nice results. However recently I have been looking at prime wide angle old manual lenses which offer great value for the money in my opinion. I also like landscapes like yourself as it combines plenty of walking with taking photos.

Hi Ian, I was thinking this myself, as the lens would be for landscapes then AF and all the bells and whistles are not realy required. Problem is old wide ( less than 15mm) do not seem to exist.
Unless someone else knows better :

I do have the Sigma 10-20mm and I love it!
I don't have the 12-24 but I have heard it is excellent. If you cannot afford the 12-24mm, then the 10-20mm is an excellent alternative.
In fact it has got a cult following in all mounts.
I have heard that the Tamron 10-24 is getting good reviews, but in a recent Mag test, it was'nt quite as good as the Sigma.

Either way, what ever lens you get, they have all got good reputations.

I have the sigma 10-20 and I'm very pleased with it. I bought it after some research based on reviews, price and build quality.

The only thing I initially overlooked with 'going wide', especially for landscapes, was the impact on my filter kit. In the end I ditched my cokin p series and invested in the Lee kit to truly benefit from the 10-20 field of view - I'm sure there are other filter options to overcome vignetting.

I guess what I'm saying is, look at your filter options in addition to the lens you opt for.

Whatever you get, make sure you post us some of your work with your new lens!
