Is it sitting on its stand? (If not, it won't stand up by itself.) if it is on the stand, take the stand off.

Hi it doestnt appear to have anything attached to the bottom, It looks light a hotshoe with pins in the middle. Is there something I buy to place in it so it will fit thew hotshoe on the camera

You might be on the right track there. Some flash manufacturers sell different adapters for different camera brands.
I have just noticed you bought it from a charity shop. Might have been a bad move.

If you google YN460 you will find a number of references. There is a first version described as suitable for Nikon and Canon. Vesion II mentions Pentax as well. It is apparently a very basic flash with only the one flash contact - no TTL or PTTL or even Auto so operation is entirely manual. It comes supplied with a stand which would have to be removed before attatching to the camera. It is really intended mainly for off camera use.
