I have this model. The touch pad is very useful for zooming and scrolling. But it can indeed be turned off.

To confirm, touch can be turned off, yes.
I have the large one - one of the Amazon market place sellers had it on for £259 a month or so back (it was Bamboo Distribution but I can't see them listing it any more - might be worth having a look around); at that price it was a steal.
I had to clear some desk space though...
