Inspiration with the Q

One of the things I like about the Q is that in inspires experimentation. There can be just simple stuff like Cross processing:


Or experimentation with all sorts of optical devices. here's a rough-and-ready image that I made with the 8.5mm 01 Standard lens. First, I pressed the lens up against this:


and got this:


A quick solution to a very close up close up, with a fairly reasonable result.

I've been experimenting too. This is with Blur Control on the minimum setting, colour saturation increased by one notch and shading on minimum.

This taken through my scope indoors from about 25 feet.




Using this - made by putting a cheap 40.5mm filter in a piece of plastic pipe which conveniently is a perfect fit over the eyepiece and screwing the other end onto the Q.

The Q's ability to rapidly take 3 bracketed shots (takes a time to save them, but it takes the images very quickly) makes it ideal for HDR

Sorry for the edit whilst you were posting John, this little camera never ceases to amaze me. Normally putting the images through Photomatix really emphasises any noise, the Q seems to have very little.

I am really interested in this last quote. I would like to know if the lack of noise is helped by the fact that the Q does not have an anti-aliasing filter (correct me if I'm wrong)?

If this is the case and this is the reason for the lack of noise on such a small filter, then it bodes really well for the potential of the K-5 iis.

The chair shot above showed signs of Moire in the seat of the chair in the tiff I saved from Photomatix, but it completely disappears when in CS6, even in Bridge.

I know that moire is fairly easy to control in post processing and wonder if it's applied by default in CS6.

Certainly bodes well for the K-5IIs, I'm sure that the lack of an AA filter in the Q adds to the resolution and detail it records, they need far less sharpening than files from all my other cameras, if any.

Just tried again using Serif Photo Plus as soon as the image is saved Moire disappears. Puzzling, I'm probably missing something.

Edit: Something to do with the re-sizing?

I've run into moire with PhotoPlus from time to time but it seems to be a screen problem. It disappears when the zoom level is changed. It all cases, there's no sign of moire when the image is printed. I've found this effect with files from a Samsung GX-10 and 20. Don't know if the same's true with Photoshop et al because I now use PhotoPlus exclusively.
