Inside Durham Cathedral.

Durham Cathedral authorities generally don't allow photography with the exception of special occasions. A very special occasion takes place this summer when the 1000+year old Lindisfarne Gospels return to the ancient kingdom of Northumbria for exhibition in the cathedral. Durham Photographic Society holds its annual print exhibition inside the cathedral and this year the exhibition, shot specially for the event, will be themed to mark this historic event.
Many of our members have been given clearance to exploring the cathedral's main attractions and hidden secrets to produce new prints for the photographic exhibition.
So far I have spent a rewarding morning mainly photographing the stained glass

Excellent set, beautifully exposed stained glass.

Still intending to go back to Durham after my one visit there about 10 years ago. Seeing the Lindisfarne Gospels might be motivating factor.......

I like the tonal quality in the last one. Has a real sense of magnitude and history in those subtle hues.

Wonderful shots of the stained glass. For me the art and design in #3 seems out of place in such a historical building. The beautiful Rose Window, assuming that it is the one also shown in the last photo, must be huge.

The most beautiful building in the land. Lovely photos of a lovely building.

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

The Rose Window is indeed huge and dominates the east end of the cathedral. As for the modern glass it represents just another stage in the 900+year history of Durham Cathedral. Much of the glass at Durham, and many other historic cathedrals across England, is Victorian. Many treasures of medieval coloured glass were destroyed during the reign of Henry V111 in the early 1500s. Some medieval stained glass exists in the Galilee Chapel at Durham.

Thanks for your comments. If any visitors from PUF are in Durham during July why not visit the cathedral and see the DPS exhibition - along with the Lindisfarne Gospels.
