Inside a Church

Good Afternoon ladies and gents!!

I have a AF360FGZ flash gun and trying to understand the manual is a nightmare....
I have been asked to take images of high value items and plaques for a church website. I know it is pretty dark in the church, could someone help me set up flash in plain and simply easy steps please.

Much appreciated.

This is a subject that comes up time and again.

This thread is very helpful, as is Matt's downloadable guide which is excellent value at only a fiver.

Otherwise, it might be better if you can describe specific problems that you're having, so that people can provide specific help.

I know the manuals appear complicated, but if you sit down with the camera, the flash, and the manual, and work through the instructions slowly, one step at a time, they're reasonably clear most of the time. But that's the only way - expecting to read through the manual and absorb it straight away is unrealistic.

It really isn't possible to condense a whole textbook into a simple "just do this" recipe.

Personally, I find trial and error to be very helpful, in conjunction with the instructions. Lots of experimentation at home is key, I find, before going out and having to 'perform'.

What ChrisA says in good advice.

Plaques and 'high value items' (eg. candle sticks, communion sets ...) may be highly reflective so better results may be achieved by using the wireless flash modes with camera flash in 'commander' mode and the AF360FGZ providing lighting from the side/above sufficient not to get a reflection.

If reflections realy become a problem (and with only one flash I feel they may) then don't forget to try long exposures with camera on a tripod.
Good luck

Sorry, had a closer look. Not strictly 'downloadable'. But I got mine the same day. (It might even have been the same hour, but I was probably lucky.)

Still excellent value though, and I'm not related to Matt

I have to ask why do they want to put pictures of high value items on a website?

It is a nice catalogue for thieves to choose from !

Why not try to enhance the light level in the church - get a couple of tripod mounted site lights, such as:

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/14558/Lighting-Lamps/Torches-Task-Lighting/Site-Li...

Set them up well back from where you are taking the pictures and aim three off the ceiling and walls and the fourth in the general direction of the object.

The tungsten light will tend to give a blue cast but that can be sorted with white balance or it may disappear naturally as churches always tend to give a yellow/brown cast.

I did something similar many years back on film and it worked fine.
