Info: Smash His Camera (doco)

Many societies are having to address rights, and wrongs, of photographers these days with respect to the plethora of moral, legal (exploitation and abuse), privacy, ad infinitum issues that it raises, both at professional and pastime levels.

And although not directly related, it surely had foundations somewhere and from some point in time.

On the subject of the early history and growth of what we now call "paparazzi", I see there's a new 2010 Doco out (you who know will surely find it in the ether if wanted), that focuses on the life and endeavours of one Ron Galella.

Might be a good flick, dunno really... never heard of the bloke before, and haven't even watched it myself yet but intend to RSN. The aforementioned (anti) socio-behavioral practices, implications and abuse does concern me a lot, and that's the attraction here -- although I suppose there might be some trip down nostalgic lane interest to be had too from the photographic bits.

Anyway, I thought being photophobes some of you might share an interest one way or another and like to seek it out for cinema viewing too.

Surely on this forum we are not photophobes? - a phobia is a fear of something.

We are more likely to be photophiles (if such a word exists).

I think there's a bit of a difference between aggressive paparazzi stuffing their cameras into people's faces to make a few quid and being hassled for quietly taking photos in a public place without obstructing anyone though. After reading the IMDB entry for that film it sounds as though the subject was one of the obnoxious stalker types who give photojournalists a bad name.

If you annoy someone in a bar and they eventually thump you, the court will take account of that provocation. There's little difference between that and the cases of paparazzi getting clobbered by their targets other than the fact that one party has a camera. However, the clueless PCSOs (and it always seems to be PCSOs) trying to order people to stop shooting/delete images/give their details are more like the bar brawler who belts someone having a quiet drink in the corner over the head with a bottle for no apparent reason beyond "not liking their face"!

Indeed, photophobe (Photophobia actually) is fear of light; but the underlying intent there was probably too abstracted for the context and I should not have used it.

Instead, perhaps I should have used the term photo-philiacs (hyphenated, because photo I believe, isn't actually Greek derived).

Thank you for pointing that error out. And as you might well note, communication in its comprehensible written form is far from my forté.
