Rain, and since the Sigma 10-20 is not impervious to the stuff it was time to call a retreat. One gent died on that night, hit by lightning whilst out with his dog. They found him the next morning with the dog still sat at his side. Quite sad really.

More seriously, can you describe just how you took them since these events are random.

Camera on a carbon (conductive) tripod. Just set to aperture priority and adjust until you get fifteen to thirty seconds showing or set to shutter priority for similar times. Shoot away, refiring after each exposure. It helps if the lightning is frequent. The electrical storms here are impressive and nearly predictable. I took around twenty exposures. One problem is having the camera pointed in the right direction hence the 10-20mm was used to try to see as much sky as possible.
