I am quite impressed with ACDSee - their latest Pro2 has just been released and supports K10D (not sure about the K100D super), and is very quick. You can add keywords, categories, captions and notes, a 1 to 5 rating, tagging and allows you to play with IPTC data as well.

It also costs a great deal less than Lightroom. I was fortunate enough to get a free Lightroom as I had RSP. ACDSEe is faster at sorting and adding keywords etc, but I feel Lightroom gives a better RAW conversion etc

Lilly since you already have Elements why not explore that fully first before forking out on more Abobe products or trying Picassa? You can make collections and add tags to photos in the Organiser really easily. You can find photos by date and time too if you need to, add captions etc etc.

You could also try Extensis Portfolio. It handles much bigger databases of images. It really does organise images well and allows one to find any image fast. However it costs money.

It uses Keywords and so on, it also has data fields for just about anything and everything to do with images. (EXIF, IPTC etc), once the RAW files are saved inside Portfolio, you can then export at any time, see peviews, make web pages and so on. I only scratch the surface of what it can do. I also have not lost any images or had any problems with the software.

So when I go out and come back with images, I first copy to my hard-disk to a folder, DATE, PLACE and then import to Portfolio adding Keywords, and the program brings in all the EXIF, IPTC info. Add Copyright info etc.

I have never been so organised. Thoroughly recommended software.

Graphic Converter is real good.

I rarely do anything other than very light adjustments, I like natural out the camera images best. If I do, I use Aperture, CS2/Bridge or GC.

Aperture is my favorite.

Picasa is a great basic program, pity it's not available for Mac, although I understand Google is working on it.

After reading this thread, I decided to try out Picasa and I am very impressed - particularly with the ease of making basic manipulations and the fact that it leaves your original pictures alone.

One feature I miss from ZoomBrowser is the ability to set 3 star levels - I used to rate my images during a slide show as 1,2 or 3 stars - 1 star images were then deleted while 3 stars get printed. Has anyone got a technique for doing something similar with Picasa?

Well, Picasa only has one star to give.
However, you could create new albums "One Star", "Two Stars", "Three Stars" (or "Crap", "SoSo", "Brilliant" and when looking through the pics you could right click and "Add to album" accordingly. A bit more bothersome but I think a workaround.

almost works - I created a 'trash' album and put some photos in it, but when you access the photos via the album you can only remove them from the album. You have to select the original from the folder to delete from disk....


I suppose I could initially star mark the rubbish photos and delete them before star marking the good ones for each new folder...

Prieni's reply wasn't dealing with deletion - you asked how you could mark as 1, 2, or 3 starts. His answer is what I would've said
"Albums" are for things you want to keep!
(You changed your requirements after asking the question :roll

In Picasa you can physically shuffle the images around by clicking and dragging - this is also helpful

Well, I did say in my original question that I intended to delete the one star images - perhaps I should have been clearer that this was my real goal as I'm happy to use the Picasa stars for the good photos...

Anyway, I'm getting towards a solution for my trash problem - If I add the photos I don't want to a trash (or 1*) album, as suggested by Prieni, although I can't delete them straight from the album, I can then search for 'trash' and it finds all the photos in that album listed in their folder context, from which I can delete them happily.

To be honest I'm still getting my head around the idea of having albums and folders that are independent from each other and what the possibilities of that are.
