Image Folder Numbering

I have found it a real nuisance that the K20D remembers the last image number and increments that each time, but can use the same folder number several times which can be confusing or irritating when moving them from card to PC - if you use several cards on one day it is quite possible to have a folder on each with exactly the same name and if you don't check everything it could go wrong and you fail to copy a directory across as you think it is already there and then you delete the images!

I have found a way around it that I am happy with.

On each memory card I already have a set of files in various formats with my contact details - in case I loose the card and someone finds it and they are read only. I also have my cards numbered, 2, 3, 4 ...

I then created an Image Folder based on the card number and 1st January on each card. 201_0101, 301_0101, 401_0101

The camera now starts with a new folder, 202_1702 &c

Not perfect but a little more peace of mind.

I think you've two ways of numbering, one is camera based and the other is sd-card based so to say. You can tell the camera to forget the number for example.

I've my folder based on date but the image number is based on clicks so I can have the same folder on two cards but I'll never have the same image number. When I upload them they photos will be placed on date and time.

How do you organize your photos on the computer?

All my photos are copied to my external HDD, into my photo file.

All folder reference numbers are then deleted via PC, when folder/card is empty,
so I have no problems.

Kindest regards,

Peter.

The folder number may have date as the last four digits (ddmm) but the first three are an incremental number for the card. You have a choice of that or PNTXddmm.

If you use say four cards which happen to have the same incremental folder number - over which you have little real control, on the same day you will have four identically named folders.

Then when you finish for the day and start to prepare for the next you copy the folders to the PC, when copying the second, third or fourth Windows will say

"Directory 123_0123 already exists, do you wish to ..."

You think you have already copied the images so you say no and then delete the directory from the card ... A simple error when tired but with dire consequences.

Ah okay, like said I organize everything on date and time so it doesn't matter what folder or numbering I used and then I can TAG the photos or put them in a separate folder since they are all organize on time I can simply pick out the right ones.

It's just a matter on how you do your organizing on the computer.
I'm glad you found a solution to your problem

Ultimately I do put them all in a large time/date organised directory and then split them out from there. It is just in the initial upload process that it can go wrong - as I suggested above.

Or as others do, open each folder on the card and copy to PC, but it is possible when there are large numbers there to miss a file or two at the top, bottom or one side of the list.

The K20D will count continuously if you set it to, so all you need to do is use smaller cards, one per day when away, and keep them numbered in order. When transferring them to the PC just rename each folder accordingly.

001 K20D Rivington 17 02 2010

Would do very nicely for the first in a sequence. Then:

002 K20D Southport 18 02 2010

for example, and so on.
Best regards, John

Uploading is done with the same program that organize them on date on my PC and the program doesn't look at Folder names it does look at image names so if there aren't duplicates there it doesn't matter what the folder is named.

I find it too time consuming to do it by hand and I always manage to find things while there are on date.

two words

Ctrl-A (keyboard shortcut for select all).

I used to have a friend who had a saying
"the mouse is a games controler"

I wouldn't go that far, but keyboard shortcuts are always worth knowing.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

I just load down my new photos to the same folder and from there move the, to the subject type folders and that is it. I have folders for each month club compertition and do my editing of the photos in that folder.

Another way to do things.
I can shoot it ....
