Hanging on by a thread is the title I considered for this picture Huw. Great minds think alike.
Feel free to join the thread Andrew, its one of a few winter related threads that are running currently. You can play around with photos of icicles and get some interesting abstract shapes.

Andrew, I prefer your second icicle shot because I think it has better composition. One really sharp icicle is set against the other softer ones. They might sparkle more with a slight exposure or contrast in Photoshop.

David,
I agree - it's my pick of them.

Thanks David, I will give the contrast/exposure a go as suggested.

I think your third and last shots are great by the way (maybe the last one could do with slightly increased saturation). How close were you to the icicles with your 50mm?

Cheers

Andrew

I considered increasing the saturation of the laat shot but held back because I wanted it to look light and airy and not overdone. I'm soemtimes accused by camera club friends of overdoing the saturation. But I might have another play with it to see how it looks. As for how far was I away from the subject, at a guess I'd say 18-24 inches away.

More from my icicle expedition, taken today Thursday Jan 7, this time using the DA*16-50 lens at 43mm on the K10. The sun was slowly melting the icicles and I got this drip after several attempts with the camera in drive mode. 1/25sec at F22 and ISO200.

I sneaked another one in this afternoon. I copied you and used my 18-55mm DAL (the closest I have to a 50mm prime). I felt the DOF was too shallow on my Tamron 70-300. Which is everyone's favourite 1. original or 2. Colour corrected?

I prefer the first one, it has a warmer sky which looks as its a dawn or sunset and is more attractive to my eyes.

Thanks David. Well done on catching the drip by the way... I saw a couple drop, but didn't have the skill or patience to attempt capture one.

I like the colors of nr 1, Lennardinio !!!
Much better than the blue.

But the lower top of the icicle is not in focus, and this is pity.

Yes, I know the focus issue is a shame. I took them hand held and with the sun setting there was not enough light to use a much higher aperture.

I may try again tomorrow. Glad you both like number 1, that is may favourite too.

Thanks

Andrew
