I presume you've tried restarting the computer and all the things that we would normally do?
Probably the best way to transfer images is to use a card reader rather than connecting the camera directly. If all else fails, then I'd suggest taking this route. Card readers are inexpensive and efficient.
Hope that helps!

Yes I did try everything that you suggested. I have consider possibly sending the unit back if it isn't the cable. Of course I would not consider this until my warrenty is almost over.
Thank you for you quick reply.

You transfer the downloaded update on to an SD card using a computer and pop the card back in the camera to complete the process. The Ricoh website should give full details. There's no need for the cable. I've never used a cable to transfer images -- just a card reader. They're built into most computers nowadays or can be bought cheaply as an accessory. Can I get a firmware up-date wit a defective cable ??

I have a card reader but it was easier using the cable. The one thing that I don't like about the X-5 is that it is very hard getting the lid on the battery compartment to close. I guess I'll just have to wait until I charge the batteries to get my stuff on the computer.
Thanks to all for your help ..

Bad news.. My new cable arrived and I got the same negative results. I got in touch with Ricoh and got the following reply:
There is not likely to be any firmware issue causing your USB cable to malfunction in the X-5. More likely there is a problem with the camera's USB port or the cable itself. You may want to contact your dealer to see if you can exchange the camera.
