I'm 25 years old and I can remember it being 87.5p when I began driving, 52.5p rise in 8 years :/

Yeah just rub it in quoting in litres I can't really remember how much it was when I started but I can remember the rush to the petrol stations just before a price change of a halfpence, can you imagine a rush for each change now you'd never be away from the pumps.

When I first filled up it was 50p for a tank-full! Mind you I did have to run the tank down to near the reserve to get the minimum sales amount (half gallon) in the tank.
I've had cheaper refills since - we used to get 1 litre samples from each race car we tested, which left enough for several refills in a year. Now the slops are unlikely to be more than a couple of gallons a year.

78.5 p a gallon for 2 stroke mix in 1978 for my 50cc pocket rocket - the legendary Yamaha FS1E, drop bars, nose fairing, piper power pipe, skimmed head - all of which boosted the top speed to 60mph - so long as there wasn't a head wind or hill

Although I do remember petrol being four gallons for a quid, it was my father who bought it at that. The cheapest I remember paying myself was 33p per gallon in the early 1970s. It was for my (pretty pathetic) Lambretta 125cc scooter, which I used to get to Harris College in Preston (now known as UCLan) - wouldn't do even close to 60mph, maxed out at maybe 55mph on the flat.
