For anyone contemplating getting or building a new PC, I strongly suggest you get a copy of the latest issue (Issue 1251 - my copy arrived today, so it should be in the shops tomorrow) of Micromart magazine as it has a awful lot of very sound advice and reviews of quite a number of systems from various independent PC supplier companies. It also has a good article comparing the merits of W7 and W8
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

Crikey, I used to buy Micromart in the 1990s for the adverts to the cheapest PC component suppliers. Now those suppliers all ahev websites there's no need to buy Micromart for that anymore.

There's also plenty of articles reviewing and comparing PC componants free on the web these days. Tomshardware.com is a good one

I do agree (and get the daily feeds from Tom's hardware, as well as subs to other mags like Computer Shopper, PCPro, Windows 7 and so on), but this particular issue has an awful lot of relevant and sucinct info in one place, and with lots of informed comment. That's especially true for someone who wants to get a quick but detailed overview, and with direct comment on a number of UK-based suppliers, and with current prices! A very good primer for someone who needs to know the essentials for getting a new PC at a good priceat the moment, but does not have a lot of background knowledge (as you obviously must have), or the time and patience to be able to find out.

I've had a long-time subscription to the mag and look forward to it arriving in the post every Wednesday - and this is one of the most "relevant" issues for many people for quite a few weeks (take a look if you are in a decent shop or supermarket this week and then see what YOU think).

Louise, I think your question may be best answered by going to the site and finding out.

I find it excellent, can be bought secondhand for about £150 and expanded to 8gb and will run several programs at same time. Seems very quick after XP. Good luck.

I'm impressed with Windows 7, much quicker and more stable than Vista and far better than XP.

I've just bought a Zoostorm PC for my partner and loaded it with Ubuntu (my first foray into Linux) I can't stand Microsoft and hated constantly having to fix her machine (I have a Mac)
The PC is incredible value - £99 with cash back.
and Ubuntu is flippin' awesome! so clean and easy. Absolutely no Microsoft will ever go near that machine. Office docs open perfectly in LibreOffice.
If you're not wedded to Adobe, then Gimp and a few other free apps on Ubuntu is all you'll need.
Did I say it's all free?

I like windows 7 apart from the CD burning window issue I was having.

What you need are lenses, more lenses, bigger lenses, better lenses, faster lenses, vintage lenses and when you have these, your pictures will be perfect!

I'm with Darkmunk, Open Source all the way, Gimp, Darktable and Fotoxx do everything I want. Microsoft will never get a penny from me.
