Wow, what a tricky subject, manual focus with 645 and 120mm macro with a decent crop as well

I think with some more practise I can improve on these,

Yes! And a good first attempt.

My attempts the other day were greatly aided by 3 essential props.....

1. Really good lighting.

2. A deck chair to sit out in the sun on.

3. A glass of wine to help reduce my camera shake.

Manual focus is definitely the way to go. Most of us have been content with conventional shots but with that monster camera he had to go aerobatic !
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

I'd say that a single glass probably isn't enough and a bottle should be consumed prior!

Kudos on getting shots of these fast critters! I've tried in the past and failed!

After taking John's advice literally, some better results this afternoon,

I swapped the 120mm macro for the 150mm F2.8 for a little more reach and a pint of beer instead of the wine, not a keen wine drinker

Over the 2 days of shooting these little blighters, I've shot 110 frames and have deleted 98.

.....It only takes one or two to make it worthwhile - and these certainly are

...and If you drink 2 or 3 more beers you can invoke that advanced focusing technique - Beer Goggles

Looks like you have acquired the title of honorary Drone Snapper. These are most excellent.
For a creature that hovers you have got quite a sense of motion in the first one which appears to be making a high speed right turn !

Thanks for the complement David, the main technique change was the BBF ( Beer Before Firing )

Needed some more reach so switched to the K1 with the DFA* 70 - 200 and a 3 cans of Fursty Ferrit for good measure

This is my best effort out of about 40 shots with a 645D, 6x7 Extension Tube & 6x7 135/4 Macro (cropped as it wouldn't behave). The 6x7 135 macro has a very long throw focussing ring, making quick focus changes almost impossible:
