A very atmospheric image. I like the fact you can not see the blacksmith or the horse, but know exactly what is happening.

Both excellent but I'd be tempted to clone out the lettering on his wrist band, my eye went straight to it.

This was natural light. I have tweaked the levels in lightroom.

Good point Ken re the wrist band.

Original reason for the tight crop was because I don't like the blown highlights on the farriers back

I still prefer the first one, it takes you right into the action. I take it the highlight on the back is past recovery.
