Those are both very nice captures and I like the HDR effect - really gives some atmosphere.

I really like the second one, very picture postcard like.
I like the crop as it is but have you tried cropping it a bit more from the right .

I like the two shots... but wonder whether true HDR was actually needed
You need bracketed shots when there's a huge range in contrast (so that you'd either get huge areas that were blown out or lost in the shadows).
You can get the "HDR look" by carefully tone-mapping a single image
(Perhaps one reason why the Artizen tone mapping operators are available separately as Photoshop plugins )

I have used HDR on these two, I haven't used extreme settings but I've also not tried to hide the post processing. That "Hyper Real" look is intentional in these pictures but I wanted to stay one step down from "Cartoony":
The last one works particularly well as a Desktop on my 24" iMac.
