High Force

A shot of High Force, near Middleton in Teesdale. We were away last week and for once just shooting images for ourselves. This was with the K-1, using the in-camera black and white option. The in camera JPEG settings can be quite useful.

Is it true that you are charged a fee to visit the falls?

It is true. It's only £1.50 or so and no doubt it helps with the upkeep of the wheelchair-friendly path that takes you to the falls.

A very good result from the camera processing. I understand that the K1 has advanced these things somewhat, and there are plenty of tweaking options also within the mono setting ...?

There's an impressive dynamic range visible, even given the 'constraints' of 8bit and the web, and the shutter speed has got the water nicely with a feel for the force and energy.

All the settings can be tweaked to taste Nigel, and that's true of all the camera bodies. Of course the later ones become better and better as we go, but that's progress.

Yes, I am looking forward to one day upgrading and getting a chance to try all the latest goodies! I suspect that RAW is the way the K1 is used by most owners (they are the kinds of photographers looking for the best quality and demanding conditions.... Well that's who I assume K1owners generally to be) ....

But I am actually more attracted to the JPEP lately, mainly because I've got very little time for processing now, plus I'm mostly taking flash images where the exposures and DR are mostly spot on at capture, and I appreciate being able to save out a larger number of images quickly with less time on the computer

If the K1 can reproduce even a good percentage of it's dynamic range via JPEG then I imagine I would he perfectly happy. I also enjoy tweaking things on the camera to optimize what I'm seeing on the LCD for each specific situation, so hopefully I wouldn't be losing much ....

Perhaps for landscapes I would switch to RAW, but then I take far less of them and want to spend time with them on the computer.

I hope to see some of your colour jpegs from the K1 too, as I don't see many other K1 users showing them. ...(or they're not saying if they are )

Off topic slightly John so apologies, but Nigel I find for 90% of my images I use the same tweaks in Lightroom so if I was organised like I am sure you are then I could save those settings as a preset and just apply with one hit to a batch of images, no time at all. Problem I have come across with JPEGs is every time you copy or duplicate an image it diminishes the quality. I only use JPEGs for record keeping at work and as a final output to 'fix' a processed image.

Is this what you meant to write, Rob? Just copying (or duplicating) a JPEG file should have no effect on image quality. To check, I have just copied a JPEG 10 times, and I can see no difference between the original and the 10th iteration, even viewed at 1000% (one thousand %).
