I like the last blue dolphin the most, but the loss of detail is disappointing.
You say you are lighting from below, but can you try to get more even coverage?
An interesting trick if you have a LINEAR polarizer and an LCD monitor is to tip the monitor on its back and use as a light table.
With the linear polarizer, the LCD screen can be made to appear black. Yet the light being refracted through the glass shows up just as pain as day.
For example, this photo is lit only by the monitor displaying Photoshop with some colored squares to give color. I used a monitor privacy screen (one of those that keeps the person next to you from reading your stuff) for this shot, as my polarizer is pretty cheap and left things greenish/grey. But I have seen better results from other people using their polarizer. (remember must be linear, not circular)

Actually if you can dig up one of those privacy screen overlays, no polarizer is necessary. From an angle the whole pane goes black.
Anyway, that might make lighting from below a bit easier than the balancing act it sounds like you're using now.

However I am trying to picture the set up ??
So your saying lay the monitor flat ?? then put on one of these privacy screens ?? not sure where to get one in the UK ?? then uses a linear filter on the camera lense and then from an angle the base with look black but light gets through yes ???.
I presume this is correct

You could always try something like this, which I happily admit to copying from Penatx User Mag a couple of editions ago.

Hi Gywn,You could always try something like this, which I happily admit to copying from Penatx User Mag a couple of editions ago.

How did you acheive the reverse in colour through the glass??
What I mean is the shot is showing the opposite colour through the glass than it should be. It should be red on the right and yellow on the left.
Am I missing some thing here ?? PS work maybe
Can you explain how it was achieved

Pete as I said in my PM it is caused by refraction. Apart from deliberately using the wrong WB to achieve the yellow I used no tricks. It is all down to the positioning of the glass in relation to the bottle.

I picked up my linear used for $10. Its not great, and probably why the screen doesn't go very dark, but it gave some interesting results that I could further adjust using Levels to get what I wanted.
Well all the circular polarisers I've used, Hoya and Schneider, have made my LCD screen go completely black.Quote:
If a LCD screen goes black when turning the polariser then it is a linear?
Yeah. Although some circular polarizers seem to do a pretty good job from what I hear. My circular polarizer just turns the screen a slightly darker shade of blue.If a LCD screen goes black when turning the polariser then it is a linear?

By the way, this only works on cold cathode backlit LCDs not newer LED displays as they don't need a polariser. I've tested this on my old and new(er) PDAs which have CCFL and LED backlights respectively.

Thanks to Gywn
I have managed to do a very similar shot. I followed her instructions and it worked a treat.
Here is my effort.

Cheers Gywn for your help

How about posting a picture of your setup? Would be nice to see the 'how' as well as the results.
The text description of your setup wasn't entirely clear to me, Pete. As I said, it would be nice to see the "how".
