Help! Is this portrait that good?

Thanks for providing the link, Gwyn. The other prize winners are all, to my mind, much stronger and more memorable, particularly the two "twin" shots. Still, judging photographs is mostly about personal taste, assuming the technical aspects are up to scratch.

Fantastic expression and mood but I too don't like the dead space above, looks like it's been taken for the front of a magazine and space has been left for text.

Works OK for me! and I do think it needs the space, it gives a feeling of isolation and the split background offers a feeling of depth, I did try cropping but didn't like it probably due to the face on viewpoint, don't think it's worth a £12,000 prize though, I'd be happy to get £12 for some of mine

I quite like it. BJP put this on their Nov cover and mentioned in their editorial that the competition had become a parody of itself (each year submissions were broadly similar in concept to the previous winner...). They also printed some of the other entries.

It's ok but nothing special. reminds me of the pictures that get taken in those passport booths...you know the ones...no smiling or open mouths, look straight ahead at the camera and move the seat up or down to ensure your head fits in the rectangle...£5 for 5 pics but you only get 3 chances to get the right pose.
£12,000 though? Nice work if you can get it.

The space suggest the isolation of the woman working in a man's world. Her face shows so much emotion, exhaustion, pride. I love the fact that it reminds one of a Victorian portrait, whilst showing a very 21st century woman.
You must have a better class of passport photo than most people.

The look, dirty clothes and emotion are all memorable, but really considering it's a portrait I think it could have been posed better. That two colour background is a bit sloppy I think.

Having looked at it again I like it even more. Has anyone tried photographing a woman looking dishevelled like this. I think it would take some convincing.
