Help: adaptall2

Hi!

I have just won a Tamron 24mm F/2.5 lens on eBay. The seller couldn't tell me the adapter that came with it apart from being "a Pentax one". As the lens as a good reputation and I needed a fast "wide" (well, on my SFXn at least) angle, I purchased it, thinking I could get another Adaptall2 adapter should I need it.

Apparently, I do. After receiving a photo from the seller, this one comes with a Pentax-ES adapter. It's M42, or so I read on the Net. Cool, I can use it on my old reliq, the Zenit EM. But what about my Pentax-K bodies (*ist DS and SFXn)? I need a Tamron adaptall2 P-KA adapter.

And apparently, it's not that easy to find it. As this will be my second non-Pentax lens, I have no experience with Tamron, let alone Adaptall2 mounts. So please:

1. This lens says it is Adaptall2. Does anyone know the difference from the first Adaptall mount?

2. I'm guessing I will have "A" functionality if I use the Adaptall2 P-KA adapter (model 63C). This is an Adaptall2 lens, so it makes sense. Right?

3. Does anyone have one of these P-KA adapters to sell me?

I'm waiting for the lens to arrive. In the meantime, if anybody can shed some light on this for me I would be very thankfull!

You might have more luck on the high street, new they were around £30 and you should find one for £10 - £20 second-hand.
It's worth checking eBay for a lens complete with a mount - even if you don't really want the lens or it's in poor condition.

1. With the original Adaptall mount, shutter preferred cameras required a separate mount for each lens with a different aperture.
With the Adaptall-2 system, one mount fits all lenses, regardless of maximum aperture, regardless of SLR system.

ps. the 24mm f2.5 is a great lens, only beaten in a comprehensive test of independants by a Sigma 28mm (f2.8 I think) which was bigger, heavier, more expensive and obviously not as wide.
In terms of optical quality, the Sigma was the best on test - but only just!

Just as a curiosity: I bought this Tamron off eBay; the seller is from France. As the seller did not use PayPal, I had to do a bank money transference. I normally do not buy anything if PayPal is not supported, because I've payed with this method several times with no fuss. But I really wanted this lens AND I wanted to see if it was as easy and effortless to pay via bank transference.

Well, maybe between national bank accounts it is. But not international, at least not with my bank. I spent 40 minutes on the phone to be able to perform the transference, since I could not do it from the bank's web access (security, they say). AND I endend up paying 12 Euro (roughly 8 GBP) for the transference.

I can pay via PayPal in a couple of minutes. So my choice is made...

Any different experiences?

I've decided to only accept PayPal from overseas buyers, and certainly to only use PayPal when buying myself from overseas.

So many people don't read the instructions on the auctions and I've had dollar cheques sent (bank charges £9 plus) that say pay $11 instead of £11 and all sorts of other minor problems. It just causes so much hassle and delay....

The only exception is that Sterling cheques are OK (they usually arrive from Alliance & leicester) and it can be an alternative to send cash by registered mail.

I think you're right to stick to PayPal wherever you can.

The other thing to watch out for with international bank transfers is that not only do you pay a fee (my bank also charges £ but you may also be charged a decidedly unfavourable exchange rate. Paypal also offers more buyer protection for higher value items (not that I've ever had to use it).

Auto smileys can be a nuisance. Your smiley should have been an 8 and a bracket. To do this you need to leave a space between the two.

Thanks for your experiences! This was one of those situations when I obviously had to crash to realize the ground is hard... I guess I could have done a little research beforehand, but well... that's one lesson (well) learned.

About the P-KA Adaptall mount, it seems quite difficult to come across one, and when I do it seems to go for a lot more money than I thought!

As I do not have the lens yet, lets wait and see what comes up on eBay or my portuguese auction site.

If any of you has one of these mounts laying around the house unused that you're willing to sell, let me know!

I've just won a lens c/w PK mount, you'll have to set the aperture manually and I don't think you'll have access to the multi-pattern metering system on the *istDS (I think you'll get centre-weighted like your SFXn) but at least you'll be able to use the lens.
I'll let you know when I receive it and if you're interested, you can have it for a few £'s.

I'm waiting for mine as well...

Sorry to bring this subject up again, but I have just received my Tamron. Cosmetically, the lens is in top shape, really good. No signs of hits, the glass is pristine. Problem is... the aperture doesn't work.

I mean, I can't see the aperture blades. And when I turn the aperture ring, nothing happens... so:

In these Adaptall2 lenses, do the aperture blades open and close when no Adaptall mount is fitted on the lens and you turn the aperture ring?

If so, I have a damaged lens... lucky me... where can I send it to repair? Can I do something on my own?

The lens also comes with a Pentax ES (screw type) adaptall mount. But the aperture doesn't work, even with this mount, the lens simply does not stop down on my Zenit when the pins is pushed in.

Well... any thoughts?
