Hello to all and a query on lenses

Hi,

Have been a Pentax user for a couple of years - *stD, K10D and now K20D. However, I wasn't aware of the forum until this weekend so "hello to you all".

I generally spend my vacations photographing animals (particularly big cats) in the wild. I have two bodies as it is easier changing cameras on the back of an elephant than trying to change a lens! I generally take far too many pictures and then give myself serious emotional pain trying to cut them down. I use a Mac with Apple's Aperture program to manage the images.

I am soon to head off to spend a week in the company of some gorillas in Rwanda and would appreciate some guidance on a good 70-200 (with 1.4x teleconverter). I have a pretty basic 70-200 lens but given the one-off nature of this trip I was looking to upgrade it. I have been told from someone who has been already that a 70-200 would be a perfect lens.

If anyone has any experiences they wouldn't mind sharing, they would be gratefully received.

Annette

Welcome Annette!

Yes, like you I spent years as a lonely Pentaxian before discovering this site.

I believe that, along with all the warranties, manuals, CDs and other stuff we get with our cameras, Pentax should include directions to this forum.

Now, I yield the floor to the experts.

Hi Annette,

Welcome to the forum
I'm sorry but as very much a newcomer to Pentax I can't offer any experience with the lens you mention, other than the one that I recently purchased with my K20D
As Mac says I'll have to leave that to the other Pentax experts on this forum.....

Hello Annette and welcome to the forum

If you post your question regarding 70-200 lenses in the "Pentax Lenses" sub-forum you're much more likely to get a range of answers than you are in this part. I don't own a 70-200 but I happen to know both Sigma and Tamron make lenses of that focal length (in Pentax mount) and there will no doubt be followers of both brands eager to tell you which one is the best. Good luck!
