Hello, I just bought a Pentax K5, after having sold a Pentax 67II and kit this summer. This is my first digital SLR (I know, I know!). Have had it three days, and it's been pissing it down or snowing since I bought it. Can't wait to get out and about and try it.

Was surprised to learn that my lens (16-50 f2.8 ED AL (IF) is actually the equivalent of 16-50 in 35 mm. I understood that the focal length marked on a lens was the actual focal length, and that to see what it would be in terms of 35 mm you had to apply the correction factor: i.e., 1.5-1.6, for an APS C sensor. Imagine my surprise. You do all that reading . . .

Looking forward to getting to know some of you and uploading some photographs.

regards

Michael

Welcome to the forum!

I think the answer is that the 16-50mm is the focal length of the lens, no matter what the sensor size is but the angle of view that appears on the sensor is different. This means that a lens to show the same view as a 50mm on a 35mm film camera on your K5 would be a 33mm lens.

Think of it in terms of the standard focal length lens for 35mm film being 50mm, the same coverage on a 645 camera would need an 80mm lens, the same coverage for a 6x7 would be 105mm or there abouts. The focal length of the lens remains the focal length but the amount of coverage required changes because the sensor (film or electronic gizmo)is bigger or smaller.

In terms of the view you get with the 16-50mm lens on your K5 is the same as a 24-75mm lens on a 35mm film camera.

Think I've got that right but if I'm wrong someone will be along to correct me!

Anyway good luck with the weather and don't forget with the K5 and the 16-50 you have a weather resistant camera!

Thanks, and yes, you're right about the weatherproofing. I should just get out there. As for the lens, yes, I was expecting it to be the equivalent of 24-75, but when I look through the viewfinder the tele end of the zoom is definitely not 75. There's no magnification at all. It looks like 50 mm to me. The wide end is not so easy to judge, but it looks more like 16 than 24 mm. So can it really be that the quoted range of the lens is given as its 35 mm equivalent?

No, the actual focal length is marked. A 16-50mm lens on a Pentax DSLR will show the same field of view as a 24-75mm lens on a 35mm film camera.

Hope that helps!
