Hi all i have just joined.
I have a Pentax K5 and a K100D, i am doing a course at the moment and hoping to have a part time business up and running by the end of the year.
I am reading Strobist at the moment and don't have an off camera flash that is portable. So i am looking for any recommendations for a cheap but effective flash i can use portably.
I don't want to spend too much as i just bought studio lighting (Gemini kit)but it's not that easy to carry around or use on an outdoor shoot.
I have seen others talking about the AF540 but it is expensive. Is it worth saving to buy that or getting something a bit cheaper?
Thanks for reading
Jayne

Hi Jayne,

The Yongnuo 560 is an inexpensive manual flashgun. They cost about £50 from all over the place on the web just type it into Google.

It is fully manual but that is a good thing as it will give consistency when you use. I use mine with wireless triggers that cost another £100 then you need some sort of umbrella/softbox to shape/soften the light.

If you look at my portfolio there is a picture of a bride and groom with a blue surround which was taken with one of these and a silver umbrella.

Best regards,

Martin

Thanks for that both of you. Martin would you say you find if fires off late? Is that something that can be rectified?
Many thanks:

It is not something I have experienced with these so far.

I have heard of this sort of thing but mostly it was caused by the trigger.

I too would recommend the Yongnou 560 II flash, I bought mine off of Amazon for less than £50 delivered. It's great because it's cheap, you can use it on the hotshoe, you can use the camera's built in flash to trigger it as a slave off of the camera, you can also adjust the flash power and zoom. Another feature is you can set it up to strobe, so it can flash 10 times in 2 seconds for example. One more thing is that the recycle time is amazing, one low powers it recycles in under a second. I have this flash and a Pentax AF 200fg which I use as a master. I have no other experience of any other flashes so my advice is rather limited.

Minolta 4000AF are another good cheaper option, if a bit bulkier and less well featured than the Yongnuos, they go from 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and full power settings and are quite powerful. They can be had for 10 to 20 quid from Ebay. They are OK to use on the hotshoe, and very good for use with off camera radio triggers, which I have been playing with recently.

Simple off-camera radio triggers can be bought for under 20 quid from Ebay, and are pretty well suited to simple manual flashes like the Minoltas and newer Yongnuos.
