If I remember correctly the problem first started last April which would have made the camera 14 months old.
It started playing up with manual extention tubes then ^progressed to not wanting to use manual lenses.
Eventually it decided to just keep flipping it's mirror when any button was pressed or dial turned and refused point blank to take any photos so at 18 months it was useless.
I couldn't get Amazon to obey European legislation or the Sales of Goods act so I contacted Pentax who mended the camera for me free of charge.
As Peter and John say, if you bought from a Pentax Pro dealer then contact them and they should sort the problem out for you.
If you didn't buy from a pro dealer then contact the retailer you bought from in the first instance - then if they won't help you can contact Pentax it might give you more leverage if you've contacted the retailer in the first place.
Alternatively go straight to Pentax and see what they say.
Good luck, hopefully as it's a known fault you'll get it repaired for free.
Kind regards
Charlotte

Hmm, thanks for that! I bought it from Amazon so I assumed I just had the 1 year standard warranty. I'll approach them first on the basis of the 2 year EU directive. If I get no joy, I'll try Pentax. As you say, if this is a known fault, someone should be responsible and rectify it.

Wow, that really was a saga! Glad at least someone (Pentax) came out with some credit. Also glad you got it sorted, even though it must be frustrating that Amazon didn't deal with it as per their responsibility.Good luck with Amazon. Here's a link to my long Amazon Saga;

I was was just framing my first email to them and was looking through my emails for proof of purchase/dates etc, when I realised I actually bought it through Tesco Direct! I would have sworn it was Amazon but there your go
This is probably less likely, but does anyone have any experience dealing with their returns department/customer services? I've sent a brief and to the point opening gambit email so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I've tried most of the suggestions now and it's still playing up. Off to hospital I think. I can't really justify the expense to upgrade just yet and hopefully the K-5 will come down a little bit more in the next few months.
To answer your questions Charlotte, it's about 15 months old and was bought new.
I've heard of this flipping mirror problem. When did it first manifest with yours?
