This fellow was huge, about 3 inches across and doesn't look to pleased about me disturbing him.

Me either. Not sure I even want to visit a country with spiders like that

Clarky, shame about the grass over him, but I understand that (s)he would not have been happy with you improving the scene any.

They are quite harmless Trust me In fact a friend who was with me picked it up and had it running up and down his arm, but it wouldn't keep still and i couldn't get a shot off, what with his wife yelling at him and me trying not too laugh

You can hardly claim 'macro' with a subject that big...

I'm looking for a small dog for company and gentle walks, but that would do

Pop up flash? : AF080C ringflash surely...

Stunning detail, could probably count the hairs. But if it was so friendly you really should have moved that blade of grass. But yes, it is a handsome spider, looks like it's got a big bushy moustache.

Dan, It was with the pop up flash, I didn't have another flash with me at the time, hence the hot spot on his face
I didn't notice the blade of grass until i put it on the computer. Need to pay more attention with composition in future

I was judging by the lack of harsh shadows, and especially the soft shadows either side of the blade of grass at the bottom, just left of centre, looked like the halo effect a ringflash gives. Do you use a diffuser on the pop-up?

Not noticing something at the time is a nightmare, I do it all the time. Especially with macro when you're so concentrating on focusing, it's easy to get too focused on one aspect of the pic. All part of the fun though.

Another great shot Clarky - still not my favourite subject matter I reckon if you tried to swat that thing with a newspaper it would push back!
