Have you dived into the menus? Somewhere in the custom settings is allow autofocus with remote control.

Custom function 16 refers to the Pentax infra red remote.
The remote jack plug is designed by Pentax to be used with the PC remote control software, and as such acts in parallel with the shutter button. Therefore you need to ensure that custom function 14 (AF by press halfway) is ON [user manual page 74]
Its a (perhaps) little known fact that Canon remote cable releases will also operate Pentax cameras so you should get success with your setup.
If any one else wants a radio remote release, search for one of my previous posts - I bought from an Ebay seller in HongKong much cheeper than the SRS offering, so cheep I bought 2 - cost under £30 for both including postage, delivery in under a week.
Good luck
Bob

Been shuffling the manual and the menus also and I just keep on finding the ones in the "C" 16 which in fact states 1.OFF (AF is not operated when released with remote control) and the 2.ON (Shtter released after AF operation, when released with remote control.
I know my english is pretty awful, but I would have thought by putting option 2 (ON) I should get the autofocus from the remote.
Curious enough the remote does the steps, it goes to green both of them but immediately the shutter releases, and if I press further it does go to red, but by that time shutter is gone ha

In that case maybe your remote can't do autofocus. I know the Pentax one can, I have no experience of the Hahnel one. Is it really one for Canon that you got - that might explain it?

Thanks for your help. The custom setting 14 is on. In fact I have set it up for ON (option 1) constantly because I use it AF by half press of the shutter.
Unfortunately seems that the remote must be faulty.
In the small leaflet that came along with the remote it does say that focus is achieved by half pressing, which in fact the gree lights does show but the problem is it releases the shutter instead.
Gwyn,
yup, it says on the box "For all Canon DSLR Cameras 450D/400D/350D/300D/40D/30D/
20D/10D/5D/1D/1Ds

Amin there is a Canon (EOS)20D too. I think you are confusing to different animals and that is why it doesn't work with your K20D.

Yup, you must be right. But I bought this from SRS and specifically for Pentax K20D. They told me that it works with pentax too. And there was somewhere here in the forum someone who did mention that this one works with pentax.
In fact if it didn't work with pentax then it wouldn't trigger the shutter, but it does. The only problem is it doesn't focus.
Anyway, I am done with it. I will speak to Chris from SRS tomorrow and just get the IR one. I was quite keen on the seculine to begin with, but it was just the fact that this is RF and also it doesn't need line of sight that tempted me when I went personally to the shop.
Thanks

Just because it fires the shutter doesn't mean it can operate the AF. It is a different mechanism that is used for that of course. Have a chat with Chris - I am sure he can help you out with it all. Good luck!

Hi all
I'm mystified as my radio remote is definitely sold as being for Canon 350D and 400D, as is my cable remote and both operate AF as well as shutter.
I posted about the radio remote that I bought on the forum here
I think as Gwen suggested its time to have a chat with Chris at SRS
Good luck

Hi
I have just acquired a Hahnel HW 433 80 pro remote control from within the UK for use with my Pentax K20D.
I did not fancy buying from Hong Kong despite the cheap prices. Last time I did that I suffered a spam-a-lot experience.
The box says it is for all Canon DSLR cameras but a small red sticker added as an after thought specifies Pentax K7, K10 , K20, K100, K200 & Samsung GX20 as well.
For the K7 the jack socket is on its own under a cover on the side of the camera. On the K20 the jack socket is in with two other sockets under a cover on the left hand side of the camera.
This radio remote socket is not mentioned (I think) in the K20 manual but (again, I think, but could be wrong)that Pentax only supply an IR remote that works with sensors on the front and back of the camera.
The receiver unit fits into the accessory shoe on top of the camera.
For the record the Hahnel HW 433 works perfectly with the K20 alowing auto focus with a half press of the release button on the hand held unit and auto focuss followed by immediate release of the shutter on full press of the button. There is also slide switch for 4 second delay of the shutter release.
The release worked from the off but again for the record the camera settings were found to be:-
custom menu:-
13) AF button function ENABLE AF
14) AF by press half way- ON
16) AF in remote control - OFF !! (this must only refer to the Infra red release)
29) Flash in wireless mode- ON
Drive Mode (Fn followd by up) set to single shot. (I have not tried the other modes), Drive mode does not need to be set to the final choice, remote release, This again must only refer to the Infra red release.
Hope this helps
regards

Just bought this link from SRS and I am not able to use the autofocus function in it.
This remote is supposed to work with the K20D. The lights work as it should, it turns to green at half press but then it instantly releases the shutter. When I press further the lights in the remote and receiver do turn red but by that time the shutter has released, and the snaps come out of focus. It doesn't autofocus at all.
I have changed the setting on the "C" 16 to ON.
I am just wondering if there is anything else I need to change or alter in order to get autofocus function from the camera. The remote seems to be doing all correctly, unless I am mistaken. Because it flashes green both sides and only when I press further it goes to red.
Any help I would really appreciate.
Thanks
Amin
