I can't speak for gillbod but I got mine from SRS about 6 weeks ago, just before the VAT increase. They were out of stock when I ordered it but they got it for me in about a week.

over a grand at srs, cheapest i've seen from a uk retailer is from microglobe at £833, still way above my budget

Microglobe will not actually have the lens at that price - they only seem to update their prices on the stuff that they have in stock, the prices they quote for out of stock items are meaningless; years out of date sometimes. A good FA 31 will cost you around £650 second hand.

Why not go for the new DA 35 f2.4? Owners rate it highly.

If you buy from B&H and pay all duties & tax as per their checkout process, it will cost you:

SubTotal: $964.95

Duties & Tax : $322.08

Shipping: $48.75

Order Total: $1,335.78

which, according to XE is:

Live rates at 2011.02.13 00:00:01 UTC
1,336.00 USD = 834.896 GBP
United States Dollars United Kingdom Pounds
1 USD = 0.624922 GBP 1 GBP = 1.60020 USD

Lets call it 835 pounds.

So how much are Pentax UK charging/making in profit?

All retailers make similar mark-ups, so SRS are in line with B&H. That just leaves Pentax UK creaming in the money as long as there are those willing to pay premium prices.

Best regards

B&H's FA31mm Limiteds are 'grey imports', so I don't think that's a like-for-like comparison. I'd suspect that a FA 31 Limited from Pentax USA will cost about the same as one from Pentax UK.

Of course, that still leaves the question of how much Pentax [insert developed world country here] makes in pure profit compared to Pentax China, or wherever grey import lenses come from.

It does make you wonder sometimes what is going on with pricing. B&H mark which lenses are official imports on their website so why do they have to "grey" import some items - or put another way why do Pentax supply B&H with some lenses at a good price and not others (if that is the case) I'm confused

That seems unlikely. The sheer volume of US imported items would lead to a lower (discounted) price, even if the quantity-1 prices started out the same. And I doubt that would be true either.

There have to be a lot of fixed costs associated with PENTAX in any country, regardless of volume sold, so profit may not be as big as appears. But who says that Pentax ANYWHERE ever sees the grey imports? They could easily be ghost shift items.

Could someone please explain the difference (warranty wise) between a grey import and a UK purchase?
