I work at a place that sells them, apparently the compact version is great, but the guy I was talking to said the SLR version wasn't really stiff enough to take the weight of a full SLR+lens.

We have the SLR Zoom version which is much strudier than the SLR version, the compact one is just silly and only works with small P&S cameras. My K10D seems fine on the SLR Zoom version with 50-200. Don't have any heavier lenses to try. Brilliant idea, but can be limited if you have nothing to grapple it to.

in some respects you may as well take one, but beware the joints can loosen up the more you use it so get one stronger than you need.
on the other hand, I have one and dont really use it. I always have my manfrotto plate attached so it's a pain in that respect and its really not that useful. if you're only in a city i spose you will probably be able to find a railing or something to put it on, but what do you use a tripod for? - these things are not stable enough for long exposures.
but then, everyone is different. at the price i suggest you buy one and try it a few people swear by them.

We're going to Paris in a few weeks time and we've been advised to travel light so I will not be taking a tripod with me, so I thought of a gorillapod. Has anybody had any experience with one, especially the version for a SLR with zoom. I had thought of an alternative - a beanbag. Which, if either, would you recommend? Have I seen a post on here advertising home made beanbags? Or am I getting confused?
Thanking you in advance.
