Good catch. My MZ S came with a 24-90. Very nice lens.

To try and understand why this transaction was a bargain I checked out the Lens Reviews on PF and see that the average price of the lens is $428.00 which to my mind is high. The reviews are not very complimentary about the lens and it only has a 7.3 average rating.

So what justifies the price?

The SMCP-FA 24-90mm is legendary, a superb optic. Problem is, whilst it performs superbly on a film camera, it can produce somewhat disappointing results on a digital body as it lacks any anti-ghosting coating.

IQ is very good with this lens and the focal range is also quite good. What brings it down is its build quality, which is quite poor. It has a tendancy to develop a wobble in the front zoom barrell, not always too its detriment, but I guess it can get to the stage where it can cause problems with IQ.

A buddy of mine has one and it rattles when he walks with it, but he wouldn't go out without it and it takes stunning shots. So I guess you just have to be lucky and get a good one. I just hope I am

Greg, BTW, your shutter release cable turned up today. A fine piece of workmanship, thanks mate I appreciate it. I haven't used it yet but will definately get around too it. cheers

I didn't know that Pete, I always thought it was just the build quality. So its not SMC :

I have an aversion for plastic wobbly lenses and will never put one them next to my head on the pillow at night to admire whilst I falling asleep

Enjoy enjoy the cable release.

The rattling of the lens will help put you to sleep, it works for babies

Pete, I just found this

Quote:
Manufacturer: Pentax

This versatile 3.75-times zoom lens covers the most frequently used focal lengths (from 24mm wide angle to 90mm medium telephoto) and offers a minimum focusing distance of 1.65 at any focal length for a maximum magnification of 0.18 times at 90mm. Thanks to the incorporation of two aspherical lens (AL) elements and extra-low-dispersion glass lens elements, it offers a high-contrast, high-resolution image reproduction over its entire zoom range. It also features the acclaimed internal-focus (IF) mechanism and ghostless lens coating to offer a bright, true-to-life image throughout the image field even at the edges when the picture is taken with a wide-angle setting at a close distance and against backlight.

Hmmm. Perhaps Matt and/or George will chime in soon. They both have/had this lens. I'm sure there is some reason why it is not so good on digital. It obviously isn't the lack of the aforementioned coating then, is it. I stand corrected. Thanks for the enlightenment.

I used this lens for years with my Z1. A very versatile range and as others have said, great optics.

I have used it on digital on occasions with pleasing results.

I sold mine because the 24-90 range doesn't suit APS-C. You need another lens to take care of the wide end, whereas on film it covers the spectrum from reasonably wide to moderate tele.

Optically, despite the wobbly front element (a very common complaint with this lens) it was absolutely fine.

And I didn't find anything else wrong with the construction.

So, if you can live with the range, it's a great buy.
